Garrard County High School Hosted Informative Scheduling Orientation Night on January 8th
In an effort to ease the transition from middle school to high school, Garrard County High School (GCHS and the Youth Service Center recently organized the GCS Grow Within Our Community Career Event, sponsored by First Southern National Bank and Whitaker Bank. The event, which took place on January 8th, aimed to provide valuable insights into high school credits, scheduling processes, financial opportunities, and various pathways available to students, while also making connections to our local businesses.
The event started at 5:00PM with an Information Session in the auditorium. GCHS Principal, Mr. Michael Anderson, along with School Counselors, Mrs. Kelley Gillum and Mrs. Jessica Woods, guided attendees through the intricacies of high school credits, the KEES money program, and the trimester grading system. Additionally, a preview of the diverse pathways offered at GCHS was provided.
Following the informational session, the evening continued with an Interactive Pathway/Career Fair in the gym from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with various pathways and programs offered at the high school. The event showcased how these pathways connect to real-world businesses within the community, with our business members ready to interact at community tables. Live student demonstrations of skills learned in pathway courses were featured, allowing attendees to gain a firsthand understanding of the educational experience at GCHS.
While primarily targeted at 8th-grade students to assist with scheduling, the GCS Grow Within Our Community Career Event welcomed all students and families interested in learning more about GCHS and the diverse Career Pathways it offers. Notably, elementary students in 4th and 5th grade also had the opportunity to join the experience during the afternoon session. High school students took the stage, showcasing demonstrations of skills learned in pathway courses, sparking enthusiasm among younger students about their future learning opportunities.
The feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive. Elementary administration expressed delight, stating that students and staff returned raving about the event, emphasizing their love for the experience. One parent shared, "Our dinner conversation with our 5th Grader was about GCHS pathways and what he planned to do when he got to high school!"
The GCS Grow Within Our Community Career Event proved to be an informative and engaging experience for students and families, setting the stage for a successful high school journey.
